For more than thirty five years, Rye Harbour Nature Reserve has been a great place to discover coastal and wetland wildlife. You will see many seaside plants and animals that you will not find in other parts of East Sussex. The landscape was created by great ridges of shingle pushed up by the sea over hundreds of years. In the summer, breeding birds include many species of terns, waders, ducks, and a spectacular display of specialised shingle plants such as Sea Pea and Sea Kale. In spring and autumn, you can find a great range of migratory birds and more seaside plants in flower. In winter, great flocks of ducks, including Smew and waders arrive, and there is a good chance you will see the elusive Bittern that lives in the reedbeds at Castle Water. There are four bird watching hides (all with some wheelchair access), a network of footpaths and an information centre opened by volunteers on most days.

This year is, of course, Diamond Jubilee year when we will be celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's 60-year reign... and looking back at the history books, it is a huge achievement!
